After two years, Camila Cabello fans have finally been gifted with the full audio of her demo for “The Middle” which was later passed on to Country superstar Maren Morris.
The collaboration reached the #5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey’s biggest hit. Furthermore, the stand-alone single was nominated for various Grammy nominations, such as “Record of the Year,” “Song of the Year” & “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” in 2019.
Cabello’s demo of “The Middle” stands apart from Morris’ high-energy smash with its blue, melancholic vibe. Both versions feature the same lyrical content with the exception of Cabello’s bridge in the demo:
“Lookin’ at you, I can’t lie
I wanna let this go, now
The sofa’s gettin’ cold, now
We keep talking without pride
I need you on my skin
Just come on and let me in, just”
Variety revealed that around 12 artists, including Lauren Jauregui, Carly Rae Jepsen, Tove Lo, Charli XCX, Bebe Rexha, Daya, Elle King & Bishop Briggs, had originally auditioned for a feature on the song. Demi Lovato was also revealed to have rejected the track in favor for her ‘Tell Me You Love Me’ single “Sorry Not Sorry.” Anne-Marie also had to cut the cord as she released “FRIENDS” with DJ Marshmello around the same time, while Camila Cabello pulled out two weeks before the song released when “Havana” featuring Young Thug began to dominate on the Billboard Hot 100.
